The Legacy of Jane Ross

In 1979, company founder Jane Ross began tutoring students in her living room in Memphis, Tennessee. She left her teaching position at the age of 29 to devote her career to improving post-secondary opportunities for all students, particularly those who were underserved in area schools. She developed a business that provided private tutoring and workshops for students who were preparing for college admissions tests such as the ACT, PSAT, and SAT.

Jane Ross Memorial Scholarship

The Jane Ross Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Jane’s love of Special Olympics and her desire to help high school seniors with college selection. This scholarship is awarded to one high school senior each academic year who has volunteered with the Special Olympics and chooses to write about their volunteerism in a college application essay.

Preparing for the Future

Since 2013, Dr. Ben Phillips has served as the Agency Director for Jane Ross Tutoring. Dr. Phillips is a former high school teacher and principal who continues to work with students by preparing them to raise their scores on the ACT and other college readiness assessments. Additionally, he facilitates professional development for middle and high school teachers, showing them how to integrate ACT prep into their regular classroom instruction and assessment.

Dr. Phillips also teaches in the School of Education at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. As a professor, one of his main research interests is raising rates of college readiness among high school students. He won a grant to study the cognitive strategies of high-performing test takers and frequently shares the fascinating results of that investigation at local, state, and regional conferences.

Dr. Phillips routinely reviews newly released ACT tests and analyzes each question, a process that guides the agency’s overall teaching approach. With the input of other experienced Jane Ross instructors, he oversees the development of new strategies, presentations, and printed resources to make sure our students are exposed to the most effective and most up-to-date training.
